WIMBORNE, DORSET JULY 2018 Timber Sash Windows & French Doors Replacement
This project involved the replacement of traditional timber sash windows and French doors within a grand country house set in the Dorset countryside. Now converted into four large flats, the building required carefully designed replacements that would enhance comfort and security while respecting the scale and architectural detail of the original Victorian property.
Premium Timber Windows designed, manufactured and installed bespoke timber sash windows and a matching French door, delivering improved performance without compromising character.
Key Project Details

The Challenge
Although the building had been converted into flats, it retained many of its original architectural features, including large sash windows with lead weights and an unusual glazing bar layout. The existing windows were draughty and inefficient, contributing to heat loss and reduced comfort.
The challenge was to replace the windows with modern, double-glazed units that would significantly improve performance while preserving the original proportions, glazing patterns and visual presence expected of a grand Victorian country house.

Glazing & Frame Specification
The windows and French door were fitted with double glazing, with toughened glass specified where safety regulations applied. This specification dramatically improved thermal efficiency and security compared to the original single-glazed units.
A dual-colour paint finish was applied, allowing the internal and external colours to differ. This enhanced both the interior aesthetic and the external appearance, while providing long-term protection to the timber frames.

Installation was completed over five days by a four-person crew, with work carefully managed to minimise disruption to occupants of the flats.
Each sash window was installed, balanced and sealed to ensure smooth operation, airtightness and accurate alignment. Final finishing checks confirmed consistent detailing, clean paint lines and correct function of all moving parts.
The Results
The completed installation delivered a significant improvement in comfort and performance. The flat is now much warmer, with no draughts and noticeably improved security. The new sash windows and French door sit naturally within the building, preserving its grand appearance while introducing the benefits of modern materials and glazing.
The combination of traditional operation and contemporary performance ensures the property remains comfortable and secure without losing its period charm.
