WOKING, SURREY AUGUST 2018 Timber Casement Windows & French Doors Replacement
This project involved a large-scale replacement of timber casement windows and doors for a substantial detached Georgian home set within extensive grounds in Woking, Surrey.
Due to the size of the property and the volume of timber windows and doors involved, the works were delivered across three carefully planned phases. Premium Timber Windows designed, manufactured and installed a comprehensive package of bespoke timber windows and doors, combining traditional detailing with modern performance and structural capability.
Key Project Details

The Challenge
This was a large and technically demanding project, both in scale and complexity. The property featured a wide variety of window and door types, including large bay windows, numerous casements and multiple door sets, all incorporating Georgian glazing bars.
A key client requirement was that the new windows replicate the existing window frames, which featured a more rectangular moulding rather than the more commonly used ovolo profile. Maintaining this detail consistently across more than fifty windows was essential to preserving the character of the house.
In addition, many of the existing windows were load-bearing, meaning that careful planning and structural consideration were required during removal and replacement to ensure the building remained fully supported at all times.

Glazing & Frame Specification
The windows and doors were fitted with modern double glazing, with toughened glass specified where safety requirements applied. This significantly improved thermal performance while maintaining appropriate sightlines for a Georgian property.
The inclusion of traditional Georgian glazing bars ensured the windows retained their classical appearance, while modern glazing technology improved insulation and security.

Installation was completed over 24 days by a four-person crew, with careful sequencing to manage the structural demands of the project. When removing larger or load-bearing units, particular care was taken to ensure the building had adequate temporary support before installing the new frames.
The replacement windows were designed to support the loads placed upon them, allowing them to integrate structurally as well as visually. Final finishing checks ensured smooth operation, correct alignment and consistent detailing across all windows and doors.
The Results
The completed installation delivered a noticeable improvement in comfort and usability. The property is now warmer, with significantly improved insulation and all windows and doors open and close smoothly.
Externally, the new timber windows and doors preserve the refined Georgian appearance of the house, with consistent glazing bars, mouldings and proportions across the entire building. Internally, the upgrades have improved both comfort and day-to-day functionality.

Common Homeowner Questions
Can existing window profiles be replicated?
Yes. Bespoke manufacturing allows existing mouldings to be matched, including less common rectangular designs.
Can replacement windows support structural loads?
Yes. Where required, windows can be designed to support loads when installed correctly.
Are Georgian glazing bars purely decorative?
They can be either structural or applied, depending on the design and performance requirements. Applied offers better thermal performance, however structural is often required in grade listed properties.
Do large replacement projects need to be phased?
It depends. Phasing helps manage disruption and ensures consistent quality across large properties, as well as spread the cost of the works over a wider time period. However we also do many projects of a substantial size which are done in one singular phase.
Will new timber windows improve warmth in large homes?
Yes. Modern double glazing significantly improves thermal performance compared to older timber windows
