The Challenge

Located within the New Forest conservation area, this cottage was subject to strict design requirements. The existing timber windows & french doors had become inefficient, contributing to heat loss, but any replacements needed to remain faithful to the original joinery and overall character of the property.

The client wanted the new timber windows and French door to replicate the delicate detailing typical of Georgian cottages, including slim profiles and traditional glazing patterns. At the same time, the property needed to benefit from modern insulation and improved comfort.

Our Approach

Detailed Survey

Following a detailed survey, our team designed bespoke timber flush casement windows and a matching French door, carefully modelled on the original units to retain the correct proportions.

Consideration

To meet conservation requirements, the joinery incorporated modern double glazing while maintaining a traditional appearance appropriate for the property.

Preserving Authenticity

Delicate Georgian glazing bars were used to recreate the original detailing, with a dual-colour paint finish applied to align the exterior with the conservation setting and complement the interior décor.

Seamlessly Aligned

All timber windows and doors were manufactured from sustainably sourced timber and factory finished to ensure durability, consistency and a high-quality finish.

Glazing & Frame Specification

The timber windows and French door were fitted with modern double glazing, improving thermal efficiency while maintaining slim sightlines. This specification significantly reduced heat loss compared to the original units, helping to make the cottage warmer throughout the year.

Timber windows and doorss were all finished with a durable microporous paint system, protecting the joinery while allowing the timber to breathe, essential for long-term performance in traditional properties.

Installation was completed over five days by a two-person crew, with work carefully planned to minimise disruption in the village setting.

Each window and door was installed, aligned and sealed to ensure smooth operation, airtightness and accurate detailing. Final checks confirmed a consistent finish across all elevations, with glazing bars and paintwork aligned precisely.

The Results

The completed installation delivered a noticeable improvement in comfort. The cottage is now warmer, with reduced heat loss and improved internal conditions, while externally the property retains its original Georgian charm.

The new flush casement windows and French door sit naturally within the conservation area, meeting aesthetic requirements while delivering the benefits of modern materials and glazing.
