Key Project Details

The Challenge
This project formed part of a large side and rear extension to a modest family home. While the building works were underway, the client decided it made practical sense to replace all windows and doors at the same time, rather than returning to the project at a later date.
The challenge was to ensure the new windows and doors complemented both the original house and the newly extended areas. The client wanted a warmer, more comfortable home, with improved insulation and a unified appearance across all elevations. Timing was also critical; the installation needed to align smoothly with the wider construction schedule to avoid delays or disruption.

Glazing & Frame Specification
The timber windows and doors were fitted with double-glazed units, with toughened glass used where safety regulations applied, particularly for doors and low-level glazing. This specification improved thermal performance, helping to retain heat and reduce energy loss across both the existing house and the new extension.
Timber frames were finished using a durable microporous paint system. This allows the timber to breathe while protecting it from moisture and UV exposure, supporting long service life with straightforward maintenance.

Installation was completed over eight days by a two-person crew, working in coordination with other trades on site. The programme was planned to fit neatly within the wider building schedule, allowing the extension works to progress without interruption.
Each timber window and door was carefully installed, aligned and sealed to ensure smooth operation and airtightness. Final checks were carried out on site to confirm functionality, finish quality and visual consistency across all elevations.
The Results
The completed installation delivered a clear improvement in both comfort and appearance. The homeowners now benefit from warmer rooms, reduced heat loss and a consistent window and door design throughout the property.
The new timber bifold doors enhance the connection between the extended living space and the garden, while the timber casement windows provide a clean, balanced aesthetic that works equally well on the original house and the new extension.

Yes. Doing both at the same time allows for consistent design, improved efficiency and a smoother overall build programme.
Are timber casement windows energy efficient?
Yes. When combined with modern double glazing and draught proofing, timber casement windows offer excellent thermal performance, even better performance than new uPVC and aluminium windows.
Is toughened glass required for doors?
Yes, toughened glass is used where safety regulations apply, particularly for doors and low-level glazing.
Do timber windows require a lot of maintenance?
No. Modern factory-applied microporous finishes significantly reduce maintenance requirements.
