FARNHAM, SURREY, OCTOBER 2016 Timber Casement Windows & Bifold Doors for Barn Conversion
A comprehensive installation of timber casement windows and bifold doors as part of a complete barn conversion into residential accommodation. The project involved transforming a former agricultural building into a warm, light-filled single-level home, while ensuring the finished appearance remained in keeping with the surrounding period architecture.
Premium Timber Windows designed, manufactured and installed a full package of bespoke timber windows and doors, delivering excellent thermal and acoustic performance alongside a sympathetic, rural aesthetic.
Key Project Details

The Challenge
This project involved converting a barn into a fully self-contained residential home. The client planned to move from the main house into the barn due to mobility and leg issues, making it essential that the new accommodation worked predominantly on a single level and provided year-round comfort.
At the same time, the plot was being split, with the main house sold separately. As a result, the converted barn needed to remain visually faithful to the surrounding period property, ensuring both buildings sat comfortably alongside one another. The client also wanted to introduce as much natural light as possible, requiring a combination of large new openings and carefully considered replacement windows.
The barn’s location next to a busy main road added another layer of complexity. Reducing external noise without compromising the appearance or ventilation of the property was a key priority.

Glazing & Frame Specification
Given the proximity to a busy road, acoustic performance was a critical consideration. Acoustic double glazing was specified for elevations facing the road, significantly reducing noise transmission into the living spaces. To maintain background ventilation without compromising sound insulation, acoustic trickle vents were installed to all applicable windows on that side of the property as well.
Toughened glass was used where safety requirements applied, particularly for doors and large glazed areas. Together, this specification delivered a warm, quiet internal environment while meeting modern safety and performance standards.
All timber windows and doors were finished with a durable microporous paint system, allowing the timber to breathe while protecting it from moisture, UV exposure and temperature variation.

Installation was completed over three days by a four-person crew, coordinated alongside the wider conversion works. Each window and door set was carefully aligned, sealed and checked to ensure airtightness, smooth operation and consistent sightlines.
Final inspections confirmed correct operation of all opening elements, secure fixing, and a cohesive external appearance that respected the barn’s original form.
The Results
The completed installation successfully transformed the barn into a comfortable, light-filled home suitable for single-level living. Internally, the property benefits from improved warmth, significantly reduced road noise and excellent natural light throughout. The combination of casement windows, French doors and bifolds creates flexible living spaces that connect naturally with the surrounding landscape.
Externally, the timber joinery remains visually faithful to the barn’s character, sitting comfortably alongside the neighbouring period house and supporting the successful subdivision of the plot.

Common Homeowner Questions
How do I reduce noise when my property is next to a busy road?
Acoustic double glazing combined with acoustic trickle vents can significantly reduce noise while maintaining background ventilation.
How can I keep a barn conversion visually authentic while maximising light?
Replacing existing openings like-for-like and introducing larger new apertures on non-road facing elevations allows more light without compromising character or privacy.
Are bifold doors suitable for barn conversions?
Yes. When correctly specified, bifold doors work well in larger openings and help connect interior spaces with the outdoors.
Do timber windows and doors require a lot of maintenance?
No. Modern factory-applied microporous finishes reduce maintenance and support long service life.
Can window and door layouts be customised for accessibility needs?
Yes. All designs are bespoke, allowing layouts to support single-level living and ease of use.
